Billu Barber suffers name barbs; gets full houses

Posted by atreyee on February 13, 2009

Billu barber is the story of a small time village hair-cutter Bilas Rao Pardesi and his tryst with destiny, in a different way. He and wife Bindiya (played by Lara Dutta) have serious budgetary constraints and can hardly carry their lives. Enters Sahir khan, the superstar, (played by Sharukh Khan) for shooting item numbers in Billu’s village. Shah Rukh plays himself. News spreads like forest fire that billu and Sahir were intimates in childhood and thus, much like what Priyadarshan does so beautifully, a restrained mayhem starts.

Om Puri, Rasika Joshi and many other key actors start helping Billu for the small favor of getting a sneak peak of the superstar. Billu is himself quite apprehensive about the friendship as the hiatus between the childhood and present seems to be too large.

Billu barber review will be incomplete without mentioning the role of credits. Manisha Korde’s dialogues are a revelation but Priyadarshan has a hard time countering the thin plot line. Gulzar’s lyrics help and so do the item numbers by Deepika, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. Shah Rukh Khan plays himself and packs what only he can but the role does not offer him challenges. Irrfan khan as Billu is a delight.

What disturbs in the plotline is why there are no past references or a few snapshots and flash backs from their past to attest the friendship that Billu and Sahir shared through their childhood.

Some sheen has been removed from Billu Barber Movie with the pre- controversy about ‘Barber’ being a derogatory term. The movie will open as only “Billu”. Despite all the hoopla, Billu should be a fascinating watch.

Make your Valentines Day special

Posted by atreyee on February 9, 2009

Unlucky are those who are hit by the cupid bug in March, because for them, the ultimate day of expression, the Valentines Day, is almost a year away. Ah! Anyways, let’s concentrate on the present for now. It’s the sweet time of Valentines Day once again and the fragrance in the air is diffused with the scent of burning hearts. It’s a special day for those in love. Let’s take a synoptic view of a few doable which can make your valentine message special.

Short-city breaks – If budget is not a constraint, or at any rate, you have pursed up some moolah for the day, then you can go on a Short City Break. We will all vouch how a nice, virgin ambience makes us say things we had ourselves not conceived of and a lot of that turns out to be really pleasant. Think of jet-skiing on the Barbados beach or a cuddled up ride on Venetian gondola or just sometime together at place proximal to your home. The idea is peace and a conducive ambience.

A dinner for the belly and the heart – Valentines Day dinner calls for romantic ambience which is flushed with the theme of love. Add gastronomic delights served intermittently. Good food and a romantic aura pack quite a valentine punch together. It need not be a candle-light thing but remember not to cluster too many things. Easy flowing emotions with equally easy-flowing food and a touch of inebriation in form of soft sherry or champagne; you can’t get it better.

Say it with the magic of flowers – Valentines Day bouquets coupled with Valentines day greeting cards or Valentine shayari might not be the costliest things materially but their reach into the human heart is redoubtable. Say it with the rose and lilies, bougainvilleas and orchids and perhaps you will say them perfectly.  Not without anything is flower held synonymous with love itself.

The Valentines Day gift ideas also depend a lot on the inclination of your partner. An intellectual companion might be delighted with a creative poem, a self-created Valentine card (complimented well with love letters and love quotes) or a well-expressed Valentine message while the chirpy little doodles might wish for something along the gadget, gizmo or attire line. Soft toys still rule a lady’s heart and if you have the financial gumption then you can’t still beat a diamond. Time can’t whither the statement” Diamonds are forever”.

Dancing with the stars season 8: Blazing a remarkable trail

Posted by atreyee on February 9, 2009

At 8 PM eastern time on March 9th, Dancing with the Stars Season 8 will premiere. The two-hour premiere will showcase 13 celebrities who will be making their presence felt this summer. Rumor mills are working overtime on who may be there in the list. Dancing with the Stars new cast may confirm of names like Kevin Federline, Cindy McCain and Sherry Shepherd.

For the uninitiated, Brooke Burke and Derek Hough have lapped the coveted crown in the 7th season of Dancing with the Stars. It had been some real fun with the celebrities strutting their stuff in a no-holds-barred way. This time, Misty May-Treanor is grabbing all the news.

Dancing with the stars 2009 will again bring to the fore the mercurial talents of Misty. She was doing extremely well till she got ominously hurt last season and had to call it quits. Speculations are rife that she will be making the cut once again this season.

Unofficial polls suggest that Ralph Macchio is the contestant most people are looking for.

As for the judges, a name that’s doing the rounds is Carrie Ann Alba. She might be taking the coveted position for Dancing with the Stars Season 8. She is an accomplished dancer and a muchsought-after choreographer in the industry.

Macy’s Stars of Dance is yet another climactic feature that’s bound to raise a lot of zeal. It features the top dancers and choreographers of the present and past generation.

Nach Baliye 4 winner – Dancing their way to glory’s path

Posted by atreyee on February 1, 2009

Shaleen and Daljeet, a sheer case of reversed nomenclature, backed the Nach Baliye 4 title amidst sweeping hysteria caused due to the presence of King Khan himself. Nach Baliye 4 grand finale has ably metamorphosed into a TRP giant.

In fact, for the purpose of sustaining its TRP strength, Nach Baliye 4 brings weird alterations and at times illogical presentations (read into the fainting of Reshmi Ghosh). To come back, the day certainly belonged to the very charming and chocolaty duo of Shaleen and Daljeet. They edged past Naman and Megha.

The eventual winners of Nach Baliye 4 lapped up a prize of 50 lac rupees apart from a shining four-wheeler. Many feel that the coveted Nach Baliye 4 winner trophy has been given to the most deserving “Jodi”. In fact, the couple is being recognized as a trend-setter and bench marker layer up till the very middle part of the entire show.

People would couch how Shaleen simply broke the barriers of dance and transcended all boundaries in his charismatic impersonation of Hrithik’s “Baawre”. This probably made the final difference as the voting lines closed after the performance. The last week has been full of melodrama with the top two couples dealing in verbal barbs and banter sometimes going decidedly overboard. Having said this, this might as well have been some TRP strategy.

The central focus of Nach Baliye 4 finale was undoubtedly King Khan and he inadvertently overshadowed the gorgeous Lara Dutta who claimed to have overtaken Shahrukh to the dance fest.
